The Three Letters

When I was hired to run the IT department of a major company my predecessor left three letters in the desk that was now mine. Each letter was clearly labeled; System Failure #1, System Failure #2, System Failure #3. A post-it note was attached to the bundle of letters.

In case of a substantial system failure open the letters in order, once per failure, and they will help you through the problem.

I put the letters back in the desk and forgot about them.

About one year later we had a cascading server failure that left our corporate intranet and several important production servers off-line. While repairing the problem I remembered the letters. Curious, I opened the first letter.

“Blame me, your predecessor”

The day after we got the servers back up I was called in to my boss’s office to explain what happened and why were down for so long. Taking my queue from the letter I blamed my predecessor. My boss was satisfied with my answer and let me go.

About six months down the road we had another big failure. This time our primary database server went down and the secondary was having trouble dealing with the load. I had to put a lot of extra hours into getting them back up and we lost a few transactions due to the backup server not being able to function under the load.

Once again, I reached into that desk drawer and opened letter #2.

“Blame the equipment”

This time I lamented to the boss about how it wasn’t my fault. It was that backup server! If we had some good equipment to run on these things just would not happen. He was satisfied with my answer and I went back to work.

Things ran smoothly for the next 18 months. Then we got hit with a virus that somehow got past our firewall and wrecked havoc on our systems.

I opened the third letter.

How to Avoid Reactivation of your Genuine Windows XP after a Reinstall

When you activate Windows XP, Microsoft stores the data in the Windows Product Activation database files wpa.dbl and Wpa.bak in the folder %systemroot%\system32 or C:\Windows\System32 if it's in your C: drive. If you change the motherboard or make significant hardware changes, XP will require you to reactive. But if you plan to reinstall XP on the same hardware, you can back up the activation status and then restore it after you reinstall and avoid the activation process. You can backup the Windows Product Activation database files to diskette. They are very small.

After you reinstall XP, to restore the Windows Product Activation database files:

Start XP to Minimal Safe mode
Change directory to the \%systemroot%\system32 folder or C:\Windows\System32 if it's in your C: drive
Rename the newly created wpa.dbl to wpa.nonactivated and wpa.bak, if it exists, to wpabak.nonactivated.
Copy your backed up wpa.dbl and wpb.bak files to the system32 folder
Reboot

This should work if you want to avoid activating XP after a reinstall or restore on the same or very similar hardware. It will not work if the hardware is significantly different from that in place when the Windows Product Activation database files were created. This is not a hack to avoid activating installations.

Introduction

Greetings to all! As some of you may recall, it's been a long three years since I last occupied this space, writing a review of Windows XP - An Operating System You Can Trust. Sadly, I must confess that the reason for my prolonged absence from this web site is that I was in trouble with the law once again. As my former readers will no doubt remember, I was previously under the influence of evil Linux hackers. During that time, I committed several serious crimes - in particular, I violated the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and infringed several software patents. Fortunately, that crime spree was brought to an ignominious end when the Intellectual Property Police raided our Linux Users Group meeting. Being a first-time offender, I was paroled after only eight months in prison. I have since gone on to lead a clean and productive life using only safe and secure Microsoft software installed on my computer.

Linux User Group Meeting

Alas, I must confess to backsliding. My downfall came in the form of a computer magazine. Inside the magazine jacket was a CD containing the evil Linux operating system! I foolishly installed the software, and - just like an alcoholic who claims he's only going to have "one drink" - I was hooked again!

Fortunately, Windows XP was still installed on my hard drive. Windows correctly detected the presence of a Linux partition, and the built-in Microsoft Snitchware immediately reported the situation to the Department of Homeland Security. Since installing Linux was a violation of my parole, I was arrested by the FBI and sentenced to a further two years in a federal penitentiary.

All this might sound tragic, but really, it's not. In the end, things worked out for the best. After only one year in prison, I became eligible for a new experimental rehabilitation program. I am happy to report that it's been a great success! After receiving counselling, medication, electroshock therapy and a prefrontal lobotomy, I am once again a happy Windows user.

As a condition of my early release from custody, the parole board has ordered me to perform 300 hours of community service. This I have gladly done. Working in close cooperation with the Business Software Alliance, I have been visiting public schools, lecturing students on the evils of open source software. I can't begin to describe the satisfaction this work gives me, saving impressionable young minds from the temptation of so-called "free software." At the end of my talk, our team hands out T-shirts emblazoned with the motto, "Linux - Just say No!"

As a further public service, we then audit the students' computers for pirated software. Just last week we caught three students with unlicensed video games installed on their machines. Since they were minors, the students were not arrested - rather, they were put in foster care and their parents were fined US$150,000 for each pirated program. Considering the seriousness of the crime, this was a mere slap on the wrist. However, since these were first-time offenders, it's understandable that the authorities should be so lenient.

Installation

This is supposed to be an operating system review, so I apologize for the above digression. Sometimes I just get carried away with my personal issues - it's probably just a side effect of the lobotomy. So let's get back on topic.

Today, I am reviewing Microsoft's greatest operating system ever, Windows Hasta La Vista, or WHLV (which is also the name of a talk radio station in Hattiesburg, Mississippi - Microsoft is now suing them for trademark infringement). But to simplify things, we'll just call this OS "Windows Vista" or "Vista" from now on.

Those who have been following the latest tech news are well aware of the fact that Vista will not, in fact, be released to the public until early 2007. Fortunately, for techies who just can't wait to get their hands on the latest and greatest offerings from Microsoft, there are two simple solutions - pay the Earth to become a Windows developer, or volunteer to be a beta tester. I chose to do the latter.

The beta version of Windows Vista - officially known as the Community Technology Preview (CTP) - can be downloaded through Microsoft's developers' site. Please note that the CTP is a time-limited copy which will self-destruct (along with your data) at a secret predetermined date.

I enthusiastically downloaded my copy and began the installation procedure. This might be a good time to mention that the Vista installation program differs from the Windows XP installer in several significant ways. For example, when XP installs, it merely wipes out any Linux partitions on the hard drive. Windows Vista, on the other hand, will go much further - it will mount any Linux partitions it finds and then plant viruses and root kits in /usr/bin. After all, Linux hackers have been doing stuff like this for years to Window users - now it's time for some payback.

Just as when you install XP, at the very end of the installation process, Vista insists that you need to type in a user's registration key. However, XP requires a mere 25-digit alpha-numeric key which is not even case-sensitive. Vista, which is far more secure, requires a 250-digit key which is case-sensitive and also includes spaces and various symbols. For example, a valid registration key might look something like this:

If you make a mistake when typing the key, the installation program will abort and you have to start over from the beginning. Furthermore, users will be required to retype the key every time they restart Windows. Leave it to Microsoft to come up with such a clever method to protect us from the evils of software piracy!

Windows Hasta La Vista, baby!

All About Security

As you can see from the foregoing process, Microsoft is very concerned about security. Indeed, the 250-digit registration key is only the first step in protecting users from depraved software pirates. Microsoft has incorporated many other exciting features to ensure that Vista is the most secure OS ever!

Vista comes with built-in support for Microsoft's Software Quality Assurance program. The way it works is that if users inadvertently attempt to install a dangerous open source program such as the notorious OpenOffice, Vista will intervene. The fiendish program won't be installed, and Vista will instead download the equivalent closed source program (in this example, Microsoft Office) and automatically bill the customer's credit card. I can't but express my admiration on this innovative approach to protecting customers, as well as Microsoft's profits.

Microsoft's award winning browser, Internet Explorer, has also been beefed up with new security features. For example, attempting to download illicit MP3 files will result in a security alert being emailed to the RIAA. Similarly, any attempt to share movies will be reported to the MPAA. Software pirates will have their activities reported to the Business Software Alliance. All other suspicious activities will be reported to the Department of Homeland Security and Interpol. Only through such diligent cooperative efforts between Microsoft and the relevant authorities can we protect our cherished free society.

One frequently requested feature by users is the ability to encrypt the filesystem, and Vista supports this. However, the filesystem is not encrypted by default - the user has to set this up. When you enable this feature, Vista sends an email to inform the US National Security Agency (NSA) that you have done so. Then, using the NSA Back Door, FBI agents can periodically check your computer to ensure that your machine contains no terrorist messages, pornography or open source software. Users might be concerned about having such a back door on their system, but they really shouldn't be. The FBI has assured everybody that they will not abuse this power, and only concentrate on catching terrorists and other miscreants. I see no reason not to believe them. After all, if you can't trust the FBI, who can you trust?

Project Cyborg

One of Microsoft's most innovative projects yet involves the use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags. These "tags" - a chip smaller than a grain of rice - have generated much discussion lately. Large supermarkets and department stores are very interested in placing RFIDs inside of products - then a tag reader at the cash register would automatically ring up the purchase without the need to physically handle the merchandise. RFIDs have also been used for electronic toll collection. The chips have also been placed under the skin of dogs and cats in order to identify lost pets. Most recently, several countries have decided to put RFIDs into "biometric passports" - this makes it much easier for criminals and terrorists to identify wealthy foreign tourists in a crowd, which helps facilitate mugging and kidnapping.

Further expanding on this great new technology, Microsoft plans to use RFIDs with Window Vista in order to facilitate payment. Here's how it would work. First, Vista users would get the tag surgically implanted in a convenient location, most likely the back of the neck. The RFID would contain an individual's Windows product registration key, so "chipped" users would no longer need to type it. Furthermore, customers with the embedded tag would be able to enjoy online shopping without the need to type credit card numbers - a tag reader on their computer would do all the work. This system is destined to replace Microsoft Passport. Other uses for the embedded RFID tag would be to alert authorities if users attempt to access forbidden web sites, or send emails to shady individuals on a government watch list.

Furthermore, thanks to Microsoft's cooperative agreement with with Wal-Mart, chipped customers would no longer need to pay cash or show their credit cards at the checkout stand.

Consumers are going to love these great new convenience features. Nevertheless, some whiny so-called "privacy advocates" have made a big fuss over Project Cyborg. Without a doubt, they are a bunch of left-wing Linux loonies who can be counted upon to always oppose the advancement of technology. Needless to say, it's a waste of time trying to argue with these Luddites - it's just best to ignore them.

Special Edition

As you may have read elsewhere, Microsoft plans to release several editions of Windows Vista, thus catering to specialized markets. For example, several high-ranking government officials and Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates would like a special edition that lacks a registration key, does not monitor online activity, and doesn't support Project Cyborg. Microsoft will generously cater to these customers' needs by producing a version that meets their requirements - however, it will only run a rare computer based on a CPU called an Itanium, affectionately known to geeks as the Itanic. Literally dozens of Itanics have been sold so far, and market analysts predict that nearly 100 will be in circulation by year 2010.

Conclusion

Clearly, with Windows Hasta La Vista, Microsoft has another winner on its hands. With valuable built-in convenience features and ironclad security, Microsoft has definitely responded to customers' needs. Furthermore, erh...ahh, what's this? Sorry everybody, somebody is at the door. Just a moment...

It's the Intellectual Property Police. Hmm...they've got a warrant. It seems that by writing this review, I violated the Non-Disclosure Agreement which I clicked on when I downloaded the beta. Damn, I really need to read those 150-page End User License Agreements before clicking on "I Agree." Oh well, you've got hand it to Windows Vista - just look at how efficient it was at reporting my illegal activities to the authorities! What an amazing operating system!

I'm about to be arrested, so I guess it might be a few more years before you'll be hearing from me. Given the circumstances, I can't think of a more appropriate thing to say except, Hasta la vista!

Non Traditional Jobs That Pays $100K

It's no secret that doctors, lawyers, traders and senior executives at large corporations typically earn six figures or more. But where are the $100,000 jobs for the rest of us -- the 140 million American workers who lack the inclination, the aptitude or the tolerance for student debt to go for the classic big-money careers?

It turns out that in the 2000s, there are quite a number of six-figure occupations. Here are a few worth your consideration:

Technology

Developing nations may graduate more engineers than the United States, but we've still got enough jobs to keep salaries generous, at least in some specialties. Electrical engineers earned an average of $112,000 in 2005, according to the Employment Policy Foundation. Engineering managers earned a median salary of $97,000 in 2004, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

"There's an absolute dearth of talent with three to five years of experience" in interactive specialties such as Web design, information architecture and usability, says Allison Hemming, president of staffing firm Hired Guns.

Senior Web producers can earn $85,000 to $110,000. "Interactive feels very 1999 right now," Hemming says. "It's a real opportunity for people who may have left the field and come back or are just out of college."

Can production workers approach six figures? They can if they're in the right high tech specialty. According to Jack Dolmat-Connell, president of compensation consulting firm DolmatConnell & Partners, some semiconductor fab technicians can make up to $90,000 with overtime.

Financial Services

Professionals involved in the provision of bread-and-butter financial services �- not just those ensconced on Wall Street -- often earn six figures. "Producers [salespeople] in insurance and branch managers -- those can average $120,000 to $125,000," says Dolmat-Connell.

Real estate may be suffering from an overabundance of new entrants, but long-term prospects for high earnings in pricey markets are still bullish. "Real estate agent -� that's one of those quiet little jobs where you can make a boatload of money," says Bill Coleman, senior vice president for compensation at Salary.com. An agent who participates in the sale of 12 or 14 half-million-dollar homes per year -- easy to do in big-money markets like the Northeast -- is likely to hit $100,000 in commissions.

Entertainment and Hospitality

Can a worker ascend from burger flipper to six-figure earner? Not every day, but it happens. "Restaurant managers can earn $100,000 at high-end restaurants and resorts," says Coleman.

For those who live near a casino, big earnings may be within reach, even without a college education. "The top 25 percent of casino pit managers earn over $100,000, with just high school and five years of experience," says Dolmat-Connell.

Security and Hazard Duty

Rent-a-cops generally earn low pay, but well-placed security professionals can do much better. "Security guards for celebrities can earn six figures," says Coleman. These jobs are concentrated in New York and Los Angeles, but sports superstars may have security based in their teams' hometowns.

Less-glamorous gigs can pay equally well, if work conditions warrant a premium. Oil rig workers must cope with hazardous and remote work sites, so high-ranking crew members earn up to $100,000.

Government

If you're a six-figure aspirant, the federal government may be one of the last employers to come to mind. But Uncle Sam is looking for thousands of professionals at this level each year.

"Retirement rates for midlevel managers are high; more and more, the government is hiring people from the outside directly into management," says Kathryn Troutman, Monster's Federal Career Coach.

And middle-management jobs in government may be better compensated than their private-sector counterparts. "Midrange professional salaries are much higher, and the flexibility and benefits are much better," says Troutman. These jobs generally fall into the GS-14 and GS-15 grade levels.

Computer and internet are part of my everyday life, it's my field, it's my job, and I can't imagine a single day without touching a computer. For me, without the computer, my productivity will be halted, I'll be useless without my Linux machine. The 6 Species of Job Interviewers: How to Handle Them

Over the years, I've noticed that people who interview job candidates tend to develop a distinct personal style. If you can quickly read an interviewer's style and establish rapport, you will appear more confident and knowledgeable. Here are six common types to know:

The Absentee

His Style: Sometimes an interviewer isn't mentally in the room. Maybe his boss dropped a big project on him earlier that day, or maybe he's completely unprepared.

Your Best Approach: It's almost impossible to make a strong impression on someone so distracted, so keep it simple. If this person is strapped for time, offer to reschedule. Get your most important message across, and then focus more time on your interview follow-up.

The Buddy

His Style: Smiles, jokes and tells you to relax: "Hey, let's go shoot some pool and talk about the job." There are actually two forms of Buddy I know: inept interviewers who just want to be liked, and expert ones who realize that putting you at ease can get you to reveal a lot of information you might otherwise not mention, like your salary range.

Your Best Approach: Be friendly in kind, but don't be lulled into completely letting your guard down.

The Inquisitor

His Style: Never cracks a smile or diverts from a "show me" attitude. Fires off tough questions about your experience. This is the interviewer you imagine when you say, "I hate to interview."

Your Best Approach: Stay cool, and project respect and confidence. Don't think the tough, poker-faced attitude means you won't get the job. Often, the Inquisitor believes a stressful interview unearths a candidate's hidden qualities. It's also important to remember that the Inquisitor can often become your best advocate throughout the interview process and on into the job.

The Laser Beam

His Style: This interviewer focuses on one topic, such as a sales job's quota. The Laser Beam is a common style for a line manager.

Your Best Approach: Satisfy his judgment, and move on. Save your wide-ranging questions for the HR department.

The Shotgun

His Style: Fires questions all over the place. One minute you're talking about sales quotas, and the next you're discussing company politics. The challenge is that the subjects don't seem connected, and you have no idea how the interviewer is judging you.

Your Best Approach: This is where your careful presentation really pays off, because you can relate your strengths to many different aspects of the job.

The Silver Bullet

His Style: Believes there's one magic question to ask -- and one magic response that determines whether you're right for the job. The Silver Bullet asks a few perfunctory questions about your skills, then leans back as he says, "Tell me, how do you tie your shoes?" or "If you could have dinner with three people, who would they be?" From your answer, the Silver Bullet decides yes or no.

Your Best Approach: Answer simply, and move on.

Tailor Your Approach to the Interviewer

You step into a position of power when you recognize the interviewer's style and adjust your approach accordingly. As you prepare for the interview, ask yourself, "How might my answers be different for different interview styles?"

With a Laser Beam, for example, you might offer him a choice when you begin answering a question ("Would you like to talk about this aspect of the job or that one?"). I finally found a home in Linux under SUSE (although I'm using Ubuntu now because my 8 year old nephew is using my SUSE box). I just can't help but be amazed by the ease of use and the availability of packages in SUSE. From Music editing, synthesizing music, drum beats, DVD burning, up to CAD drawings, SUSE has it... sometimes I would just think.. is there anything that SUSE can't do? But somehow, those powerful packages need to be added from external repositories (community based), and since I've been installing SUSE for friends and some customers, I have to blog the list of repositories for my easy access. PLDT DSL, the worst ISP in the Philippines

Yes.. that's right, as from my experience, I can say that PLDT DSL is the worst Internet Service Provider in the Philippines. The PLDT company may be big and has a wide consumer base, but the service really sucks! They only have good promotions and marketing strategy which lures the consumers to their death trap, but once you are already a subscriber, expect the worst.

All the company considers is to gain more profit by adding more subscribers, eventhough their facilities could no longer handle the traffic, they keep on publishing advertisements, and promotions to even get more subscribers. Why do I say this? Because at peak hours of 1 PM to 5 PM you will get disconnected most of the time.. page load time outs are also frequent.. and this could mean dissaster if you have an internet cafe business, a bad input for customers.. to the point that you may lose your customer to other cafes subscribing to BayanTel, SkyDSL, or Globe Broaband.. Another thing, I subscribed for 768kbps speed, but I only get 300 to 400kbps speed! And when you ask their customer service, they would blame your network, your line, or whatever but they won't blame their service.. I'm sure that my lines have no problem.. why? Because when I use their account (used by service men to test lines), I get a whooping 2MBps! so it means that my line has no problem, it's their datanet that handles the accounts that has the problem! And being a Network Administrator, I know how to troubleshoot my lines and I know how to trace the problems.. now, to be specific, the problem lies in PLDT's new IP block 58.xxx.xxx.xxx, same thing with their DNS server with IP number 58.xxx.xxx.xxx.., but the 203.xxx.xxx.xxx IP block and DNS server works just fine.. Speaking of Customer Service/Support, try calling 173-275, prepare yourself to dial as many times as possible, it would take at least 30 minutes before someone answers.. they will just acknowledge your report, then you have to wait at the average of 5 days before they could resolve the problem, and they won't even give you a refund! Now, If you have an internet cafe business, this could mean thousands of loses!

Downtimes are acceptable if they are not frequent, but if you get an everyday downtimes for 3 to 4 hours as what most subscribers experience in PLDT, then you better think of looking for another ISP.. as of now, I'm thinking of looking for another ISP, I could not take it anymore.. same thing with some of most of my friends, they will just finish the tie-up period, then they will look for another ISP..

As a matter of fact, there are so many disgruntled subscribers that the PLDT's official forum always gets vandalized by hackers.. go visit their forum to see how many angry customers there is.. http://www.pldt.com.ph/forum/forum.asp

Force GAS PRICES to Go Down in the Philippines

Interesting and can be done. Try it people.

This makes MORE ADDITIONAL PRESSURE against gas
companies lately.The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we
couldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an
inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.

Please read on and join us!

Currently, unleaded gasoline is over P33.00 and it is still going up (sometimes
unnoticed). Despite the fact that a barrel of oil has gone down to US$62 from
US$70 (when Superstorm Katrina hit New Orleans), gasoline prices are still going
up instead of a downward trend.

Worst, the big oil players such as Caltex, Shell and Petron claim that they are
still losing money. It is time we need to take aggressive action to teach them
that BUYERS control the marketplace....not sellers. The only way we are going to
see the price of gas go down is if we hit them back by not purchasing their gas!

And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How?

Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an
impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year, DON"T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest
foreign oil companies such as SHELL and CALTEX.

For now, let us buy gas only from Petron and/or small players such as SeaOil,
Total, etc.

If CALTEX and SHELL are not selling any gas, they will be forced to reduce their
prices and if they reduce their prices, other companies will have no choice but
to follow suit. Thus, the start of a price war. In this way, the buying public
wins.

But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Shell and Caltex
gas buyers. I am sending this note to about thirty people. If you send it to at
least ten more, e.g., 30 x 10 = 300 and those 300 send it to at least ten ore,
e.g., 300 x 10 = 3,000 and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth
generation of people (and granting all will cooperate), we will have reached
over THREE MILLION car owners!

Again, all you have to do is just send this to 10 people and

DON'T purchase ANY gasoline from Shell and Caltex. Remember, the main idea is TO
FORCE A PRICE WAR and not hurt ourselves or the economy.

That's all.

How long would all that take before we can feel the effect? If each of us sends
this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 3 MILLION
people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! Acting together
can make a big difference.

Yahoo Publisher Pays More Than Google Adsense

It is a pleasure for me to receive an invite from Yahoo to test their Yahoo Publisher Network. At first I was skeptical because I am an existing Google Adsense publisher. But as what most webmastes would do, I gave it a try and was surprised at the results. In 10 days, I have earned in YPN what I would normally earn in Google for 3 months! This means more revenue for publishers like me. I tried different schemes to test YPN and Adsense alternatively on my websites, and with the same number of clicks per day, Yahoo pays almost 900% more than Google. Of course I thought maybe something was wrong because YPN is in Beta testing as of now, but as I search different forums, YPN publishers share the same experience. Last night, me and my drinking buddies (Bernard Deriquito, Oscar De Roma and Chito Deriquito) came up with a question "What the hell is engine displacement?" Or the "CC" thing in automobiles and motorcycles? Another thing, what is the difference between 4 stroke and 2 stroke engines? These questions came up since Oscar has a Kawasaki KXR 900 and a Honda XR 200.. so what the hell are we talking about? Since 3 of us is an IT Graduate and 1 is a Civil Engineer.. no one could answer the question.. after a few research, I found the answer..

What is Engine Displacement?

Engine displacement is typically measured in Cubic Centimeters or CC

You may compute it by multiplying the bore area times the stroke then multiply the number of cylinders.. =)

What is the difference between 2 stroke and 4 stroke engines?

In the automotive world, there are two basic types of engines. There are two-stroke and four-stroke engines. Almost every car or truck on the road today contains a four-stroke reciprocating internal combustion engine. This classifies both gasoline and diesel automotive engines, whereas two-stroke engines are more commonly found in lower power appliances, such as chain saws, mopeds, jet skis, and more.

Two-stroke engines have two important advantages over four-stroke engines: 1. They do not have valves, which simplifies their construction. 2. Its spark plug fires once every revolution (as compared to four-stroke engines which fire once every other revolution) giving it a considerable power boost. Because there are twice as many power strokes per revolution, it can pack twice the power in the same space as a four-stroke engine. These advantages make the engine not as heavy and less expensive to manufacture, which is why you will find it in most small devices.
With two-stroke engines, you need to use special two-stroke oil with the gasoline. In a four-stroke engine, the crankcase is totally disconnected from the combustion chamber, so the crankcase can be filled with heavy oil to lubricate the bearings. In a two-stroke engine, the crankcase is performing as a pressurization compartment to force air and fuel into the cylinder, so it can’t hold a thick oil.

However, you will practically never find a two-stroke engine in any automobile. Despite the fact that two-stroke engines are simpler, lighter, and produce twice as much power as a four-stroke engine, there are four important disadvantages that they have. First of all, their lifespan is not nearly as long as that of a four-stroke engine. The parts of the engine wear down a lot faster due to the lack of a good lubrication system that is found in most four-stroke engines. Two-stroke oil is very expensive and is used quite often. It needs about four ounces for every gallon of gas. On the environmental side, they produce a lot of pollution. It would only be that much more if they were used in cars, considering the large amount of cars and trucks out on the road today. Because of the pollution they are already creating from small devices that use them, they may not be around for too much longer.

Here's an interesting bit of science... Dilbert's Theorem on Salary states that engineers and scientists can never earn as much salary as business executives and sales people. This theorem can now be supported by a mathematical equation based on the following three postulates:

I'm Free from AMA Education System

It was mid August when I heard the news of new policies to be implemented in the educational system of AMA. I was disheartened to know that the teachers will handle a new loading scheme.. Imagine that each teacher is required to teach 30 units of subjects per week? It is an overkill for the teachers, and I don't want to teach half-baked lessons. So, I have decided to quit my job as a teacher, I'll just finish my contract. But on August 30, 2004, the administration has announced that all teachers are terminated, we could not renew our contracts anymore. The school director admitted that the company could not afford to pay us anymore. The company will hire new teachers with lower salary. tsk.. tsk.. tsk.. These are some reasons why the quality of education in the Philippines is deteriorating. But it was a good experience staying in AMA, because of the of the big workloads that are given to us with minimal salary, it has thought me to be more resourceful and efficient in different ways..

Anyways, I'll miss my students, friends, barkada..

Dr. Yasuy Moralla Health Tips

Dr. Yasuy Moralla (who's also a nutritionist, dietician, microbiologist and who's also into homeopathy). Dr. Yasuy is a doc who's against synthetic medicines, surgery and hospitalization because she believes that every sort of ailment can best be healed naturally.

* If a child starts getting fed with too much fried chicken and fast foods at age 1, chances are, she'll have irregular menstruation by age 12. At 18-20 years, there's a big probability that she'll have breast lumps.

* Fat is the perfect food or breeding ground for cyst formations. Pork increases the risk of getting breast cancer. Why? Because fat raises estrogen levels, which in turn increases the risk of a cyst formation, which in turn can cause breast cancer.

* Don't buy canned foods with even the slightest dents and rust. There's something called Cl. Botulism poisoning (which is fatal). It's a kind of food poisoning in vacuum-packed foods. Some bacteria are anaerobic (i.e. they can live without oxygen). Spores can enter the tiny dents in the cans.

* Kids who eat too much breads, biscuits and starchy foods are more prone to diabetes and lung diseases later in life, while those who favor junk foods are susceptible to allergies.

* 85% of diseases are self-limiting, meaning, they all have a limit and will go naturally. There's really no need for synthetic drugs -- the immune system should always do its job. Too much synthetic drugs can make the immune system sluggish.

* Fever is good because it is the body's most natural form of defense. A rise in the body temperature can kill the toxemia or the virus. There's no need to lower the fever with synthetic drugs -- sufficient rest and natural foods and supplements will do.

* Diseases are the result of a long-term developing process that begins early in life and finally leads to saturation of toxins in the body.

* Fiber consumes fat.

* Antiperspirants can lead to breast cancer. That's because the aluminum salts and other chemicals clog the pores in the armpits, thus suppressing sweat. We like to be nice and dry in the armpits, but sweat actually contains traces of waste material. If we stop them from exiting our pores, they only clog up in the armpits. And these toxins eventually accumulate in the breast area (where there's plenty of fat) and they gradually form into cysts. Although the majority of those susceptible to breast cancer are women, 10% of men may also be prone to it.

* Skyflakes and soda crackers are good pampalipas-gutom because they're high in energy. But a whole can of crackers can be bad because it is also very high in sodium.

* 85% of processed Oriental foods (particularly Taiwanese) are cancerous. A diet that is 'too Western' can lead to ulcers.* The essence of cancer: manufacturers make bad food taste good.

* Dr. Yasuy also said that people who always feel sleepy after eating (like me, when I eat too much) are those with inefficient digestive systems. That's because it takes too much energy to digest the food. To conserve energy, the body's energy is therefore concentrated on the digestion. Either this is the case, or:

* Foods such as pork, beef, chicken, ginisa and oily foods naturally make one sleepy, because it takes too much energy to digest them. Steamed veggies and salads do not require too much energy.

* The most efficient pampagising foods are fruits, and not coffee. Caffeine only gives a momentary kick of energy, but makes us feel lethargic after a couple of hours. But fructose (from fruits), on the other hand, gives more energy and endurance.

* Fast foods use week-old oils. Recycled oil is carcinogenic.

* Any oil, when heated up, becomes 'bad cholesterol'. That's why it's not such a good idea to deep-fry foods in olive oil -- it's just a waste. Better fry with corn or canola oil because of the lower boiling point compared to olive oil. But olive oil is very good when taken in its raw form. When eating fried fish, it is best to soak it first in balsamic vinegar with olive oil so that the polyunsaturated fats will get converted into monounsaturated fats.

* It's OK to eat French Fries. But the fries should not be thawed when taken from the freezer. They should be cooked only for a maximum of 2 minutes. The fries should be crunchy on the outside but mealy on the inside.

* On SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome): The countries hardest-hit by SARS are not only those with cool climates, but are also those with the highest consumption of antibiotics. Synthetic drugs, especially antibiotics, eventually weaken one's resistance to diseases.

* On SARS: The longer people wear masks, the more susceptible they are to SARS because they are just accumulating the microbes on their masks. To be safe, they have to change their masks a minimum of 3 times a day. But the best form of protection against SARS is simply a healthy lifestyle and a strong immune system.

* We need Vitamin C because it is the best immune system booster. But it should be natural Vitamin C. Synthetic Vitamin C usually takes the form of 250-500 mg tablets. But our bodies can absorb only 60 mg of Vitamin C at a time. Meaning to say, we should take them in small dosages. So what happens to the synthetic Vitamin C? Only 60 mg is absorbed by the body. The rest gets stored in the kidneys as stones.

* But we also need Vitamin C because humans, as well as fish, are the only creatures that cannot make and store their own Vitamin C. That is why we need natural food supplements.

* Some people are confused by reminders of the health department on TV that 1000 mg of ascorbic acid everyday is a protection against SARS. The news also showed that airport employees took 4000 mg of ascorbic acid everyday as a form of protection against the potentially infected incoming passengers.

* Here is another esoteric fact based on scientific studies: too much Vitamin C can damage the DNA (this has also been written about in the Reader's Digest). DNA is short for DeoxyriboNucleic Acid. DNA molecules carry the genetic information necessary for the organization and functioning of most living cells and control the inheritance of characteristics. The chemical structure of everyone's DNA is the same. The only difference between people (or any animal) is the order of the base pairs. There are so many millions of base pairs in each person's DNA that every person has a unique sequence.

* Dr. Yasuy said that is the reason why she doesn't believe that many doctors and health authorities are doing their jobs properly.

* Sign of being healthy: poo-poo and discharges (such as menstruation) should not have any bad ('malansa') smell.

* Most synthetic drugs are not chilated, i.e. they do not get absorbed by the body 100%. A large percentage still accumulates in the kidneys, which is why it's not good to be dependent on medicine. In this case, one sickness leads to another. Carl Linnaeus said, "To live by medicine is to live horribly." Hippocrates said, "Thy food shall be thy medicine." That is why we simply have to eat well to get well.

* Vetsin (MSG or monosodium glutamate) is bad for the health. Though the source of MSG is sugar cane (which is very natural), chemicals have been added while being processed. It contains sulfur and some benzoate (sorry I didn't get the chance to write them down, Dr. Yasuy was talking fast) that become insoluble in the body. In short, they become toxins. That is why MSG also causes bloating.

* Commercial chicken is stuffed with steroids and antibiotics to make them fat and resistant to diseases. Unfortunately, they don't exactly do the same thing to those eating them.

* Since fried chicken from fast food joints are breaded, they are fattening. That's because starch, when cooked with fat, cannot be utilized by the body. They just get stored in the body.

* Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a sign of hormonal fluctuations. Girls who suffer from PMS have a large probability of becoming infertile later in life.

* If meat is rare or medium-rare, the fats will enter the body as grasa or in the liquid form. Small amounts of it can even be used as lubrication for the blood. But if meat is well-done or overcooked, the fats just remain as plaques, which become the arteries' worst enemies.

* Some meat-processing plants put estrogen patches on cows to make them nice and fat (because we love soft, fat beef). Estrogen makes meat more tender because it puts the meat and the fat into short, alternate layers (so that the meat feels tender and juicy when we bite into it).

* The human digestive system can only digest and absorb food that is broken down into its simplest form. But the higher the temperature and pressure the food is subjected to, the more its chemical structure is altered -- therefore, the less digestible it becomes. We love to put meat in pressure cookers and to cook it for 45 minutes or longer, particularly in nilagang baka.

* But prolonged cooking of meat makes it less digestible, no matter how soft it may become. The result? It becomes putrified, dead matter in the intestines. They're just as good as toxins. And since they don't get digested, they just get 'stuck' in the intestines. That's why we get constipated after eating too much meat.

* Ever wonder what the putrified dead matter looks like? That's the smelly, black-spotted (almost mud-like) poo-poo that we get after drinking herbal slimming teas. Just imagine how many years we've been cooking meat this way, and even more, what our 26-32 feet of intestines may look like today!

* Dr. Yasuy is not really suggesting that we all turn vegetarian (although it is undoubtedly the best form of diet).

* The best way to cook beef is rare to medium-rare. It's still in its simple form that way, and therefore can become digested efficiently. Well done steaks only turn into toxic, putrified dead matter in the intestines. But actually, the simplest (and best) form of food is in its raw form. But since bacteria love to live on meat, we have to raise its temperature (but just enough to kill the bacteria).

* So what happens to the putrified matter in our intestines? Fatty acids in the stomach raises bile acids and enzymes that are necessary to digest meat. But too much of these acids can cause 'holes' (I'm using layman's terms) to form in the intestines and lining of the stomach. Since there's nothing but toxin in our digestive system, our villi (the short, finger-like projections that absorb nutrients from food) will also absorb the toxins -- till they reach the bloodstream. And since there's nothing but toxin, the blood will also absorb it. Once these toxins reach the bloodstream = allergies, skin rashes, asthma, arthritis, sinusitis, hypertension and many more.

* Yup, this goes to show that many of our ailments are problems related to digestion. By the way, if there's too much of putrified, dead matter in the intestines, we won't be able to absorb efficiently all the nutrients from the food we eat. That's why we have to cleanse and detoxify our system from time to time. And those with good metabolism (i.e. people who can eat a lot without getting fat) are also those with efficient digestive systems. That's because they can quickly absorb the nutrients and release the energy.

* So not eating is not the way to weight loss, according to Dr. Yasuy. All we have to do is to make our digestive system perfect. So even if we eat five times a day or more (as long as they are the right kinds of food), we won't gain a single pound.

* Not all overcooked foods become putrified dead matter. Meat becomes putrified, in particular. Overcooked veggies may lose their vitamins and minerals, but they still provide us with plenty of fiber, which is very good for us.

* Improper eating, living and thinking habits are the primary cause of degeneration. The same type of toxin, when localized in a joint will result into arthritis (uric acid). When localized in liver, I leads to hepatitis or cirrhosis. In the kidneys, it results in nephritis. In the pancreas, it is diabetes. In the brain, it is: insanity. Note that drugs, caffeine, nicotine and alcohol deplete B-complex, which is essential for the brain. Drugs, alcohol, caffeine and nicotine raise monoamine oxidase, which is the primary cause of depression.

* Bee propolis is the most powerful natural antibiotic. Bee propolis is like their poo-poo. Actually, beehives are much cleaner than most hospitals. That's because of propolis, which is also a natural disinfectant. When rodents enter the beehive, they get stung to death. Since bees are small, they cannot push the rodent out so they just cover it with propolis. The rodent doesn't decompose, nor does it smell bad. Propolis inhibits bacterial and viral growth.

* Want to check the purity of honey? If there are ants around the honey, it's fake. That's because no organisms can live in pure honey. And also dip a match in honey, and then strike it. If it bursts into flame, the honey is pure. If it doesn't strike, that means that it contains water.

* The human body can either be a marvel or a tragedy -- depending on how one takes care of it. I'm not feeling well today... my throat is sore.. and i have a fever.. the sore throat may have caused the fever.. and perhaps my habit of drinking cold water after 2 hours of talking and lecturing may have caused the sore throat.. Damn.. i'm so unproductive today...
